If you want to stay safe on the road, it’s wise to pay close attention to the condition of your tires. Diminished tread depth or damaged rubber can cause skids or blowouts on the road, putting you and your passengers at risk. If you notice any of the following five signs of tire trouble, it’s time to visit your local Kia dealer for a set of new tires.

Shallow Tread Depth

New car tires come with a healthy tread depth of 10/32 of an inch or more. But over time, treads wear down. By the time a tire’s tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch, it’s become dangerous to drive upon. And it’s time for a fresh set of tires.

During winter, when the roads are icy and slippery, 5/32 of an inch is considered the minimum safe depth of tread. This is even the case when you’re using special high-traction winter tires.

Blistering Rubber

It’s important to keep an eye out for any signs of damage in the rubber of your tires. If you bump over a pothole or curb, the inner layers of rubber and tubing can sometimes become ruptured. This allows air to seep out and become trapped under the outer layer of rubber, forming visible blisters.

If you notice any bubbling or blistering in either the treads or sidewalls of your tires, then the structural integrity of that tire has become compromised. You’ll have to change it out for a new one.

Cuts or Cracks

It’s natural for small hairline cracks and cuts to appear in tire rubber over time. But any cut or crack over an inch in length is problematic. A large crack like this might expand and lead to a blowout on the road. You’ll need to have it repaired or replaced before that happens.

Embedded Objects

If your tire has a nail or any other piece of metal embedded in it, you should have the object checked and removed at your local dealership. Embedded objects often cause punctures, which you might not initially notice until the object is removed.

Inexplicable Air Loss

Oftentimes, punctures are so small that you cannot even find the crack or cut causing it. During your weekly tire pressure checks, if you notice a tire losing air inexplicably, you probably have a hidden puncture. Unless the puncture can be located and repaired, that tire will have to go.
