One of the many great things about living in Fort Smith, AR is the abundance and variety of local art that can be found peppered throughout the city. The next time you’re looking for a bit of artistic inspiration or want to take a relaxing dip into the cultural waters, pay a visit to one of our recommendations below.

A Short Drive Away: 4 Ways to Enjoy Local Art Near Fort Smith, AR

1. Windgate Art and Design

Windgate Art and Design at the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith is a collection of three art galleries that serve Fort Smith and the entire River Valley area. The galleries feature exhibitions by locally, nationally, and internationally known artists, curated by gallery staff and university faculty and students.

2. The Unexpected

The Unexpected is a project to make art, education, and other art programming accessible to Arkansans. The project, occasionally working with partners, curates a selection of public art viewable for free in the downtown area, including work by local artists, galleries, and UAFS art students. Those interested in visiting each year’s full collection can download a map to make sure they catch every unique piece.

3. Akib’art

This gallery features art by owner Mireille Gracia Belinga and a rotating cast of local artists that change monthly. Visit the gallery’s boutique to find jewelry and other items that were all either created by the owner herself or made in Africa.

Head to Akib’art in your versatile Kia Carnival and you’ll get there in style, with space left if you end up finding a painting or handmade boutique item that you just can’t walk away from.

4. Fort Smith Regional Art Museum

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum has been exhibiting art by local and regional artists for over half a century, first as the Fort Smith Art Center. A 2013 expansion allowed the museum, which also curates traveling exhibitions by nationally and internationally recognized artists, to expand its cultural footprint.

In addition to art exhibits, galas, and opening receptions, the museum offers classes, workshops, lectures, and other programming for adults and children. Visitors can even drop in for free weekly art experiences that include drawing sessions and RAM Saturdays, which are make-and-take art classes with all supplies provided.

Whether you’re in the mood to visit a more traditional gallery or plan to explore the latest public art installations, you’ll need a reliable vehicle to get you to your next destination. Visit us at Crain Kia of Fort Smith and our friendly team will help you find your perfect car — with plenty of room for that new painting or some fresh art supplies when inspiration strikes.
